Located on the Southern side of Red River, Duong Lam is a village in Son Tay Commune. Having exclusive traits in architecture and art, the village is a symbol of the prehistoric Vietnamese living in the Red River Delta. Today, we will show you how to have one of the most economic Hanoi countryside tours when visiting Duong Lam.
Choose an appropriate vehicle
Motorbike for traveling
The most low-priced one is a bus. You can buy a ticket, which takes 9,000 – 14,000 VND (40 – 62 cents), at My Dinh, Kim Ma, or Ha Dong Station. Each of them has a different bus to take you to Son Tay Station. So, pay attention and get on the right one.
Although a bus will not cost much money, other types probably will. After arriving at Son Tay, you should call a motorbike or taxi if you don’t want to walk. And each of those can take 20,000 VND (88 cents) or more when you don’t know how to bargain.
Besides, 90 percent of tourists rent a bike to visit the village because it allows them to find their way into small alleys without affecting the peaceful atmosphere there. It is going to cost you 30,000 – 50,000 VND per hour ($1.3 – $2.2) and 80,000 – 100,000 VND per day ($3.5 – $4.4). You can walk if you have enough time and don’t have to go back to Hanoi at the end of the day.
In case you don’t have a high budget for rental vehicles, a private motorbike or car will be perfect. Paying only about 50,000 VND ($2.2) for gas, you can go all the way to Duong Lam and return without spending any money on renting bikes. Of course, these means of transportation are mostly for young people. They are enduring and can drive in a longer time than the old.
Bring some extra food and water
This is a tip for those who want to save money for special dishes instead of snacks when traveling to countryside Vietnam. Whether you have breakfast or not, feeling tired after walking or driving for 1-2 hours is normal. Bringing some extra food and water to restore your energy will be a good idea.
It will save you from buying junk food along the way and keep your budget for traditional dishes in Duong Lam. The extra food can be a bread, sandwich, baked potatoes, or fruits. Put everything in your backpack and you will see how useful it is.
Take time to historical sites
Delightful time in an ancient house
When you first enter the village, the entrance fee will be 20,000 VND per person (88 cents). It is not a large amount but enough for tourists to keep their responsibility in preserving the value of ancient constructions in the village.
After going inside, all of the destinations are free to enter. Besides commonplaces, including Mong Phu Village Gate, Mong Phu Village Hall, Duong Lam Ancient Well, Phung Hung Temple, and Mia Pagoda, primitive houses are extremely worth visiting.
They have been built for over 300 years but still keeping a classic beauty and refined style. Some of our suggestions are houses of Duong Thi Lan, Nguyen Van Hung, Ha Huu The, Ha Van Vinh, and Ha Nguyen Huyen. Just ask the local and they will show you the precise way.
One thing to note is that when visiting those ancient houses, you should greet the owners and their family members. Then, ask them nicely for permission to enter the house. They will be very delightful to welcome you. If you want to have some gifts for your family at home, you can buy them from these families instead of in the market.
Book a homestay room or homestay restaurant reservation
Inside a homestay
A feature helping Duong Lam ancient village keep its peace is that there are very few restaurants and hotels here. Therefore, you should not hope to find any of them in case you want to have lunch or a place to sleep.
Alternatively, you can stay in the local’s houses. And the cost is about 50,000 VND per night ($2.2), which is much lower than staying in a hotel. One simple thing you have to do is to contact the homestay service before arriving. Only when you book a reservation do the owners start making lunch or tidying a room for you.
Given that you forget to do those things, come to the street tea shop in front of Mong Phu Village Hall. The lady there will reserve a place for you when you inquire.
Have you found out where to go to Hanoi for a one-day-trip? If you consider your budget well and follow our recommendations, the total cost of the travel will be only 100,000 – 200,000 VND a day ($4.4 – $8.8). We hope that it will be one of your most exciting Hanoi countryside tours.
